      Son of David and Chloe (Hazeltine) Dexter. He was a partner in the mercantile house of Dexter & Perry in Dover, VT, moved to Wilmington and was connected with E.& O. J. Gorham; later he owned a mercantile house in Jamaica. He moved to Boston and engaged in a shoe and boot business. On 6 Feb 1856 he married Ellen Simonds, daughter of Asa and Sophia (Lyon) Simonds.
