Name James RITCHIE Birth 8 May 1757 Stewarton, East Ayrshire, Scotland [1, 2] Gender Male Died 1818 Perry, Kentucky, USA [1] - James Ritchie, son of Alexander Ritchie and Mary (Wilson) Ritchie, married Mary Polly (Keith) Ritchie, daughter of Samuel Keith and Catherine (Ring) Keith, in 1775.
They had the following children: John Sr., Alexander Crockett, Mary Polly, Henry, James, and Elizabeth.
James Ritchie served as a private in the 2nd Virginia Regiment during the Revolutionary War. He was in the battle of Yorktown, where Lord Cornwallis was captured. He told a story about this battle, that before his regiment went into action, the officers had their men mix whiskey with gun powder and drink the mixture to make them "nervy". His son, Alexander Crockett, passed this story down to his own son, Gabriel Ritchie.
After the Revolutionalry war, James moved to Buncombe County, North Carolina, either on or before 1795. His wife, Mary (Keith) Ritchie, had two brothers there, Gabriel Keith and Reuben Keith and their families. They all show up on the 1800 Buncombe County, North Carolina census.
James moved to Virginia again between 1801 and 1802 because he was living in Russell County, VA in 1802 as a citizen. And, he applied for and received a land grant in Russell County VA in 1804. The Ritchie family lived beside the Cranes Nest river, (now Wise Co, VA).
About 1813, James moved his family to Perry County, Kentucky (now Knott County), to settle on Carr Creek. He drowned while crossing Carr Creek as it was swollen. He was buried along side Carr Fork Creek of Troublesome Creek in Perry County, Kentucky. The exact location is unknown.
After James' death, all his children and his wife returned to Virginia except Alexander Crockett Ritchie. According to family tradition, James' wife, Mary, would visit their son, Alexander Crockett, in Perry County, Kentucky and stay for short periods of time.
The sons of Long John Ritchie were Union Soldiers and the sons of Alexander Crocket were Confederate Soldiers. Their families fought against each other in the Civil War.
