Donald G Smith Donald G Smith 75 Bradenton Fla formerly of Westfield and West Spring-field Massachusetts entered into eternal peace at Blake Memorial Hospital on August 12 2005 He was employed by foe A&P Tea Co for 37 yean holding several positions throughout the Springfield area He retired in 1989 as Bakery-Deli Manager at the Longmeadow location Bom in Springfield Mass he spent his youth in W Springfield and graduated from WSHS where he was a star athlete in basketball soccer and baseball "Smitty" was also active at foe W Springfield YMCA and foe Mittineague United Methodist Church youth organization For many years he was an active candlepin bowler having belonged to several Western Mass leagues and enjoyed golfing He was an Army veteran having served as an ambulance driver during foe Korean War He was a life member of VFW Post 10038 and The American Legion Post 124 He was a member of foe West Springfield-' Agawam Elks 2174 for 38 years and was named Elk of foe Year in 1987 While a member he served on many committees foe Board of Trustees and held the position of Secretary until moving to Florida He was a Founder of foe Elks National Foundation having donated in excess of one thousand dollars to its charitable endeavors He leaves his loving wife of 50 years Beverly Reinert Smith a brother Robert and his wife Norma of Sun Lakes Ariz and loved ones Amy and Mark Kosinski and their children Vivian Elizabeth and Donna of Bradenton and Karen Thans and her children Heather Erica Cherylyn Joshua and Chaz of Springfield Mass He also leaves several other relatives who through the yean knew and loved him as Uncle Don He was predeceased by his parents Mildred and Clayton Smith of W Springfield Mass and a brother Clayton K Smith of Venice Fla Don was a 60-year member of the Mittineague United Methodist Church in W Springfield and regularly attended the Oneco United Methodist Church in Bradenton Manasota Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements Calling hours will be Wednesday August 17 from 2-3pm with a funeral service to follow Burial will be at the convenience of the family Donations may be made to the Hospice of Southwest Florida 5955 Rand Blvd Sarasota FL 34238 or The Elks National Foundation 2750 N Lakeview Ave Chicago IL 60614 |
