Name Horace Page FLETCHER Title Dr. Birth 10 Aug 1849 Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts, USA [1, 2] Gender Male Died 12 Jan 1919 Copenhagen, Kobenhavns Kommune, Hovedstaden, Denmark [1] Buried Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts, USA [1] Notes - Nutritionist, Activist, Author. He was born into a prosperous family in the newly incorporated industrial city of Lawrence, Massachusetts and was educated at Dartmouth College. A successful businessman, he experienced severe health issues due to his obesity. With the intention to lose weight and gain strength he became a self-taught nutritionist who experimented with diet. He advocated food be chewed until it was liquefied before swallowing which led to his being nicknamed the ‘Great Masticator'. He led the clean living and scientific eating movement between 1895 and 1919 along with such notables as Dr. John Harvey Kellogg. Through publications and lecture circuit tours he made millions of dollars promoting his dietetic beliefs. His dieting advice and lifestyle philosophy was called 'Fletcherizing', a term he coined in his 1913 book "Fletcherism: What It I What It Is or How I Became Young at Sixty." He attained worldwide notoriety which was aided by his ability to create catchy slogans such as "Nature will castigate those who don't masticate" and "Do not eat when you are sad or mad; only when you are glad". Upton Sinclair and John D. Rockefeller were among those who followed his nutritional dogma. Henry James and Mark Twain were visitors to his palatial home in Venice, Italy. During World War I he was appointed as a food economist for the commission for relief in Belgium (CRB) serving under future president Herbert Hoover. After his death, Fletcherizing was relegated to a fad and Fetcher himself was categorized as somewhat of crackpot. However, a few of his dieting claims have gained credibility in recent times such as chewing slowly; eating only when you are hungry; and avoiding mindless eating.
